Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment with new accessories. They can also boost the base stats of the item or provide additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.
Typically, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change significantly in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons, armor and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or extra effect while the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, gathered in loot, dropped by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they are upgraded.
To upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the user must choose it and click on the Upgrade button located in the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade statistics and the required component or materials.
There are three kinds of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be placed in any kind of equipment, and offer lower bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix at the end of the item's name. For instance, adding the suffix Glyph will transform a staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with a different one, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, excluding inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in some fundamental ways. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials needed do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a couple of key items and maximize their impact instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several items.
If an item is completed and is leveled out, it will be eligible for a new set of upgrade components, and an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy and it will reset to zero on failure or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
After a piece has been upgraded to its highest level, it will be able to receive the affixes needed to enhance its abilities. The amount of affixes available will depend on the item's type. For example an uncommon or unique weapon with a base that is standard will have only two affixes, whereas a legend armor will have eight affixes.
Each upgrade will require a certain number of Flightstones and crests to complete based on the item's current level and the slot it's in. Typically, weapons require more Flightstones to upgrade than other kinds of equipment.
If an item does not attain its maximum level, the NPC gives players the option to transfer it to another character and then re-infuse it with a different set of upgrades. The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of material but will result in a lower chance of success.
To determine the height of a structure engineers utilize a level to compare the measurement against an established reference point, like a benchmark or the elevation of the ground. This method is known as a "level-loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod, and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method helps ensure that buildings are built to a high standard of accuracy and safety.
Rerolling
Rerolling is the process of changing the upgrade components of an item. It is an important aspect of the game and can drastically increase the strength of an item and damage as well as other attributes. You can do this through the item menu or by pressing the Reroll button when you upgrade an item. Rerolling items can be costly and should be used sparingly.
Reroll tokens are derived by recycling upgraded items. These tokens are then used to upgrade the original item or an similar item. Recyclable items come with an indicator that indicates the level of upgrade. The rarity and cost of upgrading an item determines the amount of level that has been filled.
In the past, some upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than other. This meant that you'd receive the most crucial stats for your build more often than others. This included stats like armor's total armour, thorns and diminished duration due to control or the weapons' bonus attack speed and crit strike chance.
This has changed since the last patch. Priority affixes are no longer required and all upgrades will have the same odds of rolling for all stats. This can be good or bad, based on what you're looking to get from your equipment.
Each upgraded item could be equipped with a special fixed-value, fixed-value benefit that increases its power by a specific percentage. These bonuses are added to regular affixes. The more you upgrade your product, the better your chance of obtaining a unique bonus.
The game also has a number set that grants a bonus when three or four upgraded items from the set are equipped on an item. This is a great method to give the character more power without spending a ton of money.
Many players choose to reroll their equipment and weapons, especially in the early stages of the game. Rerolling is a method to create a more powerful character quicker, which enables you to progress in the game and attain higher tiers.
Sets

Clicking the Upgrade button will display the item's attributes and the required items to upgrade it. This will display the item's features, as well as the required items to upgrade it. To upgrade the No-mouth face, for example, 1.1K Scrap Materials will be required, 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards.
